President's Message

Alaska is known for its vastness and harsh weather. This is particularly true in Western Alaska, which is further challenged by its lack of population centers and infrastructure. Responding in a timely fashion to incidents in this isolated region is a formidable challenge. These attributes make the National Planning Criteria for meeting the U.S. oil spill pollution prevention regulations inappropriate for Western Alaska, requiring an Alternative Planning Criteria to meet federal compliance regulations.

The Alaska Maritime Prevention & Response Network provides vessels with an unparalleled compliance program to meet federal oil pollution regulations using a combination of risk mitigation and response preparedness measures. We believe in protecting your crew, the environment, your vessels and cargo, and your reputation. Reducing risks to prevent an incident from occurring in Western Alaska is a keystone in our program. But should an incident occur, the Network is keenly poised to rapidly and effectively assist your vessel.

As a nonprofit, governed by executives from various segments of the maritime industry, the Network should be viewed as part of your Safety Management System. The Network has a second-to-none, live 24/7 vessel tracking and monitoring system that assists your vessels when safely transiting or operating in remote Alaskan waters. Our response capabilities are unmatched, incorporating the largest inventory of equipment and personnel in Western Alaska. And as a Network participant, you are part of a socially responsible organization that invests in research and development in the latest oil spill prevention and response technologies.

I have spent over 12 years at sea, sailing in both the Pacific and Atlantic regions, and just as many years overseeing maritime operations. I know all too well the unforgiving environment and risks of sailing at sea. Our team is from Alaska and stationed in Alaska. No one knows this place better. No one can respond faster.

My commitment to you is to ensure your vessels safely sail through Alaskan waters while protecting the environment and your reputation, and while remaining in compliance with U.S federal regulations. We take care to ensure no harm to your people, no harm to the environment, no harm to your vessels and cargo, and no harm to your reputation.

On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff of the Network, thank you for entrusting the Network to be your Alternative Planning Criteria administrator.

I wish your vessels smooth seas throughout their journeys…

Buddy Custard
CEO and President of the Network
