EMERGENCY SHIP ARREST SYSTEM
The Network undertook a research and development initiative to explore the feasibility of an a Emergency Ship Arrest System – P1 (P-1 System) that could be used to assist disabled (i.e. drifting) vessels in the Network’s APC coverage area. The Network contracted Seattle firm Glosten, Inc. to assist with design engineering for a “sea anchor” suitable for deployment from large ocean going vessels in foul weather. The objective of the P-1 System is twofold. The first is to turn a drifting vessel into the direction of the wind and waves, thereby reducing vessel motions. This reduces risk to the vessel and cargo, and increases the prospect of a repair. The second objective is to reduce drift rate by half, increasing response time and reducing the risk of accidental grounding. More info here if needed.
Oil Recovery System
The Network provided a grant to Pacific Petroleum Recovery Alaska (PPR Alaska) to attend the Clean Gulf Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana and display the high efficiency Otter Skimmer system. PPR Alaska continues to refine and develop this oil recovery skimming system by conducting tests in Alaska and the federal testing facility in New Jersey.
